Below are four reasons why you should
fear God:
1) You are
commanded to fear God.
Deut. 6:13 "Thou shalt fear the LORD
thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by
his name."
Deut. 6:24 "And the LORD commanded us
to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD
our God, for our good always, that he might
preserve us alive, as it is at this day."
Deut. 8:6 "Therefore thou shalt keep
the commandments of the LORD thy God, to
walk in his ways, and to fear him."
Psa. 2:11 "Serve the LORD with fear,
and rejoice with trembling."
Prov. 23:17 "Let not thine heart envy
sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD
all the day long."
I Pet. 2:17 "Honour all men. Love the
brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king."
Isaiah 8:13 "Sanctify the LORD of
hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and
let him be your dread."
Josh. 24:14 "Now therefore fear the
LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in
truth: and put away the gods which your
fathers served on the other side of the
flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD."
Eph. 5:21 "Submitting yourselves one
to another in the fear of God."
Col. 3:22 "Servants, obey in all
things your masters according to the flesh;
not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in
singleness of heart, fearing God;"
(also see Deut. 10:12, 10:20, 4:10, 6:2,
13:4, 14:23, 17:19, 28:58, 31:12, 31:13; I
Sam. 12:14, 12:24)
2)
If you do not fear God, you are probably
forsaking God.
Jer. 2:19 "Thine own wickedness shall
correct thee, and thy backslidings shall
reprove thee: know therefore and see that it
is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast
forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my
fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD
of hosts."
Prov. 1:28-29 "Then shall they call
upon me, but I will not answer; they shall
seek me early, but they shall not find me:
For that they hated knowledge, and did
not choose the fear of the LORD:"
Prov. 14:2 "He that walketh in his
uprightness feareth the LORD: but he that is
perverse in his ways despiseth him."
Rom. 3:10-18 "As it is written, There
is none righteous, no, not one: There is
none that understandeth, there is none that
seeketh after God. They are all gone out of
the way, they are together become
unprofitable; there is none that doeth good,
no, not one. Their throat is an open
sepulchre; with their tongues they have used
deceit; the poison of asps is under their
lips: Whose mouth is full of cursing and
bitterness: Their feet are swift to shed
blood: Destruction and misery are in their
ways: And the way of peace have they not
known: There is no fear of God before
their eyes."
3)
There are many benefits to fearing God.
Psa. 128:1 "Blessed is every one that
feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways."
Psa. 25:14 "The secret of the LORD is
with them that fear him; and he will shew
them his covenant."
Psa. 33:18 "Behold, the eye of the
LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them
that hope in his mercy;"
Psa. 34:7 "The angel of the LORD
encampeth round about them that fear him,
and delivereth them."
Psa. 34:9 "O fear the LORD, ye his
saints: for there is no want to them that
fear him."
Psa. 103:13 "Like as a father pitieth
his children, so the LORD pitieth them that
fear him."
Psa. 115:11 "Ye that fear the LORD,
trust in the LORD: he is their help and
their shield."
Psa. 115:13 "He will bless them that
fear the LORD, both small and great."
Psa. 128:4 "Behold, that thus shall
the man be blessed that feareth the LORD."
Psa. 147:11 "The LORD taketh pleasure
in them that fear him, in those that hope in
his mercy."
Prov. 10:27 "The fear of the LORD
prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked
shall be shortened."
Prov. 15:16 "Better is little with
the fear of the LORD than great treasure and
trouble therewith."
Prov. 19:23 "The fear of the LORD
tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall
abide satisfied; he shall not be visited
with evil."
Prov. 31:30 "Favour is deceitful, and
beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the
LORD, she shall be praised."
4)
Fear is the beginning of wisdom. Without it
you cannot get saved, and without it you'll
never be able to stop falling into sin.
Prov. 2:5 "Then shalt thou understand
the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge
of God."
Prov. 14:27 "The fear of the LORD is
a fountain of life, to depart from the
snares of death."
Psa. 111:10 "The fear of the LORD is
the beginning of wisdom: a good
understanding have all they that do his
commandments: his praise endureth for ever."
(also see Prov. 1:7, 9:10, 15:33)
Prov. 3:7 "Be not wise in thine own
eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil."
Prov. 16:6 "By mercy and truth
iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the
LORD men depart from evil."
How can you learn to fear God more?
Prov. 2:1-5 "My son, if thou wilt
receive my words, and hide my commandments
with thee; So that thou incline thine ear
unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to
understanding; Yea, if thou criest after
knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for
understanding; If thou seekest her as
silver, and searchest for her as for hid
treasures; Then shalt thou understand the
fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of
God."
Remembering
these two verses also helps generate some
fear of God:
Num. 32:23 "But if ye will not do so,
behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and
be sure your sin will find you out."
Gal. 6:7 "Be not deceived; God is not
mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that
shall he also reap."
The role fear plays in salvation:
Acts :13:26 "Men and brethren,
children of the stock of Abraham, and
whosoever among you feareth God, to you is
the word of this salvation sent."
Phil. 2:12 "Wherefore, my beloved, as
ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence
only, but now much more in my absence, work
out your own salvation with fear and
trembling."
Psa. 9:20 "Put them in fear, O LORD:
that the nations may know themselves to be
but men. Selah."
Luke 12:1-5 "In the mean time,
when there were gathered together an
innumerable multitude of people, insomuch
that they trode one upon another, he began
to say unto his disciples first of all,
Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees,
which is hypocrisy. For there is nothing
covered, that shall not be revealed; neither
hid, that shall not be known. Therefore
whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall
be heard in the light; and that which ye
have spoken in the ear in closets shall be
proclaimed upon the housetops. And I say
unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them
that kill the body, and after that have no
more that they can do. But I will forewarn
you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which
after he hath killed hath power to cast into
hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him."
Heb. 10:29-31 "Of how much sorer
punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought
worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son
of God, and hath counted the blood of the
covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an
unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the
Spirit of grace? For we know him that hath
said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will
recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The
Lord shall judge his people. It is a
fearful thing to fall into the hands of the
living God." |
